Product Description

Update: Pedal, Stretch, Breathe is out of print as of April, 2013. The good news is that an expanded, book-length edition came out in August, 2013. You can find it right here. Thank you for loving this little book as much as we do!

Pedal, Stretch, Breathe: The Yoga of Bicycling is an illustrated guide to incorporating bicycling and yoga by Kelli Refer.

If you’re a bicyclist who’s curious about yoga (or just about why your hips feel so tight after a long ride) or a yoga practicer who’s curious about cycling, you’ll enjoy this small book. In a friendly, accessible voice, Refer brings together the details with the big picture. Breathing techniques, hamstring stretches, Seattle’s bike infrastructure and urban gardening movement, the science of particulate pollution, and the broad philosophical metaphors of yogic teaching all tie together convincingly in ways you never expected.

Sections of the book include: How to breathe your way up the steepest hills (and the science behind bike paths and air quality); a flow chart of stretches to ease your achey knees and sore back; a guide to your and your bicycle’s chakras that will charm any skeptic’s heart; and more!

Refer is a yoga instructor and daily cyclist in Seattle. She writes and posts videos about yoga and bicycling on her blog, Yoga for Bikers.

Excerpts from Pedal, Stretch, Breathe

Riding a bicycle and doing yoga are both great ways to practice being present. Staying in tune with your body, mine and breath – especially while riding your bike and doing yoga – just feels good.

Our breath is our life force – without it, we die. Each exhale connects you to your core strength and each inhale offers nourishment for every cell in your body. Pause and take a nice deep breath, fully exhale, and see how you feel.

Chakras, one aspect of yoga, offer great insight for deepening your understanding of your body. Chakra translates to “disk” or “wheel.” Chakras are like spinning wheels of energy inside the body, propelling us forward through time and space.

Can you find the zen of adjusting your fender bolts?

Yoga and cycling infuse me with personal power, connecting me to the strength I contain.

  1. :

“I need a recording of those words read in a calm, yoga-teacher voice to play whenever I get frustrated by heat, cold, potholes, or drivers…. Pedal, Stretch, Breathe is a unique and thoughtful read for anyone interested in both bicycling and yoga.”

  2. (verified owner):

“This is a tiny tome that makes me want to get on my bike, and to bike more mindfully and healthfully, and get even more enjoyment from it than I already do. It describes the many ways that I can enhance my biking experience, to make biking yoga…so that, instead of biking to yoga class, I can yoga to yoga class. Awesome.”
