About Taking the Lane

Taking the Lane, the blog, is about bicycling and other means of empowerment. Its print companion has the same theme, though with a more explicitly feminist focus. Our mission is to publish nonfiction that inspires people to ride bicycles, remove freeways, and have fun.

About me

Hi, I’m Elly Blue. I live in Portland, Oregon and write about bicycle transportation. My work has appeared in Grist, Bitch, BikePortland, Momentum, Reclaim, and elsewhere. I also co-run PDX by Bike, a business that helps people find their way around Portland by bicycle, and a nonprofit business alliance called the Portland Society. I am currently working on two books, which you’ll be hearing quite a bit about here soon.

There are no ads or paid content on this site. If you click on a book title, it’s probably an affiliate link to Powell’s Books, one of the last big independent booksellers that happens to be based in Portland. If you click on any book title I link to here and then go on to buy anything through the Powell’s site, you’ll be supporting them (a lot) and me (a little). If you’d rather just cut to the chase and check out some books, here are a handful of recommendations.
