That’s right—we’re doing it again.
The Bikes in Space zine (#10 of the quarterly Taking the Lane series) was a hit all around. You liked it, the stories and art submitted were awesome, and I had an absurd amount of fun making it happen. All those stories really just whetted my appetite for more. And luckily, it turns out that there’s a demand for feminist science fiction about bicycling. Who knew?
So the second volume is on. This won’t be part of the quarterly zine series—it’ll be another standalone paperback book with a spine. Lets bring bike science fiction out of the shadows and into the world!
Please send your stories as text attachments (most any format will do) to elly at taking the lane dot com. As for length, 500 to 2,000 words is the sweet spot, but submissions can be shorter (and very short stories stand a better chance of being included in the book). Stories can be sci fi, fantasy, or whatever variation on the genre category suits you; they must involve bicycling or bicycles in some way, and be from a feminist perspective. People of color are particularly encouraged to apply, as is anyone whose experiences are underrepresented in mainstream sci fi. Illustrations that fit these guidelines are also sought.
The deadline for submissions is November 15, 2013. The book will be released in spring, 2014.
