Vehicular Cyclists weigh in on women

After clicking through to the original forum thread to confirm that John Forester’s comments about gender screencapped here were made in earnest, I have nothing to add.

Thanks to the strong-stomached Sam Ollinger, director of San Diego advocacy group BikeSD, for going boldy into the trenches to find this stuff. I just made a small donation to support her organization’s work, too much of which consists of dealing with crap like this, and you can do so too right here.

Sam is a badass. And that is shocking.

I wouldn’t condemn a group for the words of an individual, but wow, Mr. F. is not doing himself or his movement any favors in the Of Course I’m Relevant/I’m an Expert Sweepstakes.

i agree with samuel j. forester is a crank, but vehicular cycling is a matter of common sense and self-preservation. there may be a future in which completely separated infrastructure and/or the death of the private automobile make vehicular principles irrelevant, but in the existing reality i am asserting my space in the travel lane rather than cowering on the shoulder waiting to get hooked or forced into the curb.

Agreed, Russ. But I can’t help but think that the attitudes displayed on that forum thread are one of the reasons why such a riding style remains essential in so many places.
